don’t let go

your hands with mine

walking to school

smell of freshly sprinkled grass

humid texas air

don’t let go

i whisper with each step

closer to the school doors

safety overwhelms me

don’t let go

for the first time

a little girl felt

at peace

bell rings

time to leave

but not just for school

i can’t recall when he ever held my hand again

but i wish daddy would’ve heard me saying

“don’t let go.”
